Subject: This Week at Medford UMC -- September 11, 2020

This week at Medford UMC for {today}.

A Word from the Pastor

Happy Friday, Church!

My prayers this week have been hyper-focused on families, teachers, school staff, bus drivers, and of course, students beginning a new and unique school year.

With last week’s Labor Day focus on sabbath, we transition to a new series focusing on forgiveness. In our day to day lives, we are in a constant flux of deciding to forgive or not. Everything from an argument with a family member, to someone not holding a door open for us at the grocery store has us constantly evaluating levels of forgiveness whether we realize it or not. When we talk about forgiveness in church settings and even in the Lord’s Prayer, it’s often aimed outward – a forgiveness in relation to other people. And this is great, it’s definitely something that we constantly need to be reminded of, but this series is going to focus more on forgiving ourselves. The subject over these next few weeks will be around our own humanity, how mistakes are inevitable in our lives, and the essential act of offering ourselves the same forgiveness that we strive to offer others.

To kick this theme off, I’ll jump back to a text familiar to Holy Week. I’ll be looking at the scene of Jesus praying in Gethsemane before His crucifixion as told by Mark. Despite all the miracles and wisdom that comes from Christ being fully divine, in this short section of scripture, we see Christ also being fully human. We’ll talk about this revealing look into His humanity and what that teaches us about ourselves.

And I’ll do my best to not burst out into any “Jesus Christ Superstar” songs.

No promises.

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Rachel

Opportunities to Serve & Give

Red Cross Blood Drive: The region’s blood supply has been severely impacted during this time of pandemic. Yet, the need for continued blood donations is urgent. On Thursday, October 1 from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Medford United Methodist Church is hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive in our Family Life Center.

Precautions are being taken and guidelines established to ensure that each donor and each Red Cross staff member remain safe throughout the entire donation process. Please click here to read about the changes to our normal blood drive procedures and the actions you will need to take in order to donate. Our webpage will be updated as precaution requirements evolve and we get closer to the date of the blood drive.

Follow this link to make an appointment to donate. Walk-ins will not be accepted at this blood drive.

For more information about donating blood, visit the Red Cross website. Use the sponsor code “Medford UMC” to find us. Follow these links for specific details on donor eligibility, a description of the donation process, or a list of iron-rich foods to help boost your iron level for donation.

We Need You: Our congregation members are vital partners with Medford UMC's staff in worship. We need you to read scripture, lead a hymn, share an instrumental piece or offer a three-minute object lesson as a Children's Moment -- either on your own or with your family member(s). We'll give you support and guidance, but we need your participation! If you can help, please email Pastor Joe or any member of our music staff.

Thank You! Over the past few weeks, we have been collecting funds to purchase school supplies to support families served by Christian Caring Center in Browns Mills, Neighborhood Center in the City of Camden, and the Interfaith Homeless Outreach Council in Camden County. Through your generosity, we raised $1,555! That's a lot of pencils, pens, and paper! We thank you for your support of our special mission projects, as well as your ongoing support that enables us to maintain our facilities, continue weekly worship, publish daily devotionals, and support our small groups. You can make a donation at medfordumc.org/give, give through our app, or mail a donation to the church at 2 Hartford Road, Medford NJ 08055. Your generosity makes Jesus' love visible in the world!

Pickleball is a fun, social, and friendly paddleball sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. As we begin, we will play in a marked-off area of the parking lot. When the cold weather prohibits outdoor activities, we may be able to continue playing inside the FLC. To be included in future emails for this group, please email Lisa in the church office. More details will follow soon.
