Subject: This Week at Medford UMC -- February 21, 2020

This week at Medford UMC for {today}.

Tomorrow (Saturday, February 22) is the annual UMM Pasta Dinner.
It starts at 5 pm in the FLC -- hope to see you there!

A Word from the Pastor

“If your plan is for one year, plant rice. If your plan is for ten years, plant trees. If your plan is for one hundred years, educate children." - Confucius

The things of life require us to invest ourselves in various ways. And the more investment they require, the more valuable they become.

All of us are the beneficiaries of investments made by generations of United Methodists here in Medford. Nearly every Sunday we celebrate communion on a table that came from the Branch Street Church. Some unknown woodworker took the time to carve and sculpt that beautiful piece well over a century ago, and yet it is still used for its intended purpose in worship.

We constantly make choices about how to invest ourselves: our time, our talents and our substance. On Sunday, we're considering the types of investments we make and the dividends they yield.

Peace, Joe

PS - Thank you all for your support and care this week. I have appreciated the messages, notes and cards. Thanks too for Kathleen filling in last Sunday!

Pastors’ Lenten Study

Our Lenten Sermon Series this year will guide us in a closer look at the Lord’s Prayer. To correspond with the sermons, you are invited to join Pastor Kathleen on Monday evening. We will use the book The Lord’s Prayer for Today by William J. Carl III. The group will meet on Mondays from 7:00 – 8:30 pm, March 2 - April 6, 2020 in Room 104. The book is available in paperback ($15) or ebook ($11) from your favorite book distributor. To ask questions or join the class, please email Pastor Kathleen or contact the church office. This Lent, let’s explore how the Lord’s Prayer can help us engage in God’s love within our everyday lives.

Opportunities to Serve & Give

Recycle Your Plastic Grocery Bags: A group of individuals gathers on Saturday mornings (10 am until noon) at Faith Presbyterian Church on Stokes Road in Medford to turn piles of plastic grocery bags into sleep mats for the homeless. You are invited to join this mission project in two ways: 1) join the group any Saturday morning to construct mats, or 2) bring your plastic bags to MUMC to be collected and shared with the people at Faith Presbyterian. For additional information, please contact Karen Dvorschak.

Ending Soon -- Adopt-a-Box: The Outreach Committee is collecting shoe boxes filled with personal care items for distribution to homeless shelters by the Interfaith Homeless Outreach Council. Click here to get the detailed instructions on different ways you can help. Contact Heidi Polhemus with any questions. Donations are due to be returned to the church by the end of this month.

Serving God through Song: Whether you are in first grade or have been out of school for longer than you care to remember, your voice belongs in a Medford UMC Vocal Choir. Traditionally, first graders are invited to begin choir this time of year. It's also a wonderful opportunity for adults to try choir on a short term basis as we prepare for Easter. See below for regular rehearsal times and contact Carol Reilly with any questions.

Events & Small Groups

For more info about any program, or to register for events, email office@medfordumc.org

Hearts For Missions: Join the United Methodist Women in Bowker Hall in Bowker Hall on Saturday, March 14 beginning at 11:30 am for a delicious lunch, have fun raising funds for missions at a Silent Auction and hear a guest speaker. Please sign up outside the sanctuary by March 8. We are also looking for donations of new – or nearly new items for our silent auction table, specifically representing our theme which is “Let Your Light Shine!” The traditional “heart” or “Irish” items are also welcome! Please leave items in Bowker Hall labeled “HEARTS FOR MISSION” between March 8 and March 13. Contact Bonnie Crosby with any questions.

Book Club News: Our March selection is Cartier's Hope, the latest historical fiction novel from NY Times bestselling author, M.J. Rose.  Set in 1910 New York City, Vera Garland is an heiress with a secret identity as a popular journalist.  When the Hope Diamond comes to New York, Vera suspects that Cartier is playing up its history to increase its value. Through her investigation she uncovers family secrets and touches on issues that are still current:  power, privilege, anti-Semitism, women's sexual, social and professional rights, and the never-ending struggle for tolerance and equality. We will meet on Wednesday, March 18 at 7:00 pm for discussion and fellowship.  We hope you will join us!  Any questions, contact the church office or Patty Rosvold.

Looking ahead, we will meet on Monday, April 20 to discuss Chariot on the Mountain by Jack Ford.  Happy Reading!!

Rock, Roll, And Ring 4: This year marks our 4th program, which is a collaboration between our handbell choirs, praise band, and organist. Rock, Roll, and Ring 4 will take place in the Family Life Center at 4:00 pm on Sunday, March 22 and will feature selections made famous by the Beatles, Cold Play, Abba, Journey, and others. Our resident cellist will also make an appearance. Please join us for an hour of toe-tapping fun. There will be an offering taken to support Urban Promise.
