Subject: This Week at Medford UMC --January 10, 2020

This week at Medford UMC for {today}.

United Methodist Men's Breakfast -- Saturday morning, January 11 at 8:00 am.

A Word from the Pastor

Friends -

This week we're starting a new series on Love and Fear.

There is always a battle in our hearts - every moment of every day - between these two impulses. We know Jesus calls us to love, but love always involves risk, and sometimes that risk is more than we're willing to take.

We experience this all the time:

  • in our personal relationships, even with those closest to us;
  • when we struggle to extend forgiveness to those who have hurt us;
  • in our (un)willingness to stop and help a stranger;
  • whenever we interact with those who are different from us.

Jesus preached about loving enemies, welcoming the stranger, and forgiving everyone. It's clear that the only way to love like he loved is to learn how to love through our fear.

This is what we're learning about this January. Hope you can join us at 8:15, 9:30 or 11:00!

Peace, Joe

Reconciling Ministries

On Tuesday, January 21 at 10:00 am, all those with concerns about the Reconciling Ministries process are invited to join the pastors and members of the Reconciling Team for a time of listening and answering questions. Light refreshments will be provided. If you have questions, please contact Pastor Joe.

On Monday, January 27 at 7:00 pm in Bowker Hall, there will be a special church conference. We will be joined by our District Superintendent, the Rev. Hector Burgos. At the meeting, we will vote on a statement of welcome and affirmation of LGBTQ+ persons and decide whether Medford UMC will become part of the Reconciling Ministries Network, a group of affirming churches within the UMC (rmnetwork.org). ALL members are invited and encouraged to join us.

Opportunities to Serve & Give

Busy Bees Dine & Donate: Don't cook dinner this Wednesday,  instead, dine out at PJ Whelihans in Medford Lakes between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm. Remember to pick up your voucher outside the Sanctuary or in the FLC lobby so that PJ's will make a donation to the work of the Busy Bees.

Interfaith Hospitality Network Guests Return February 2-9: Volunteers are needed to prepare meals, serve as evening and overnight hosts, and drive the van transporting our guests to and from the day center. Please be in prayer about where your talents and time can be used for that week. Sign-up sheets will be placed in the entryways outside the Sanctuary and FLC.

Recycle Your Plastic Grocery Bags: A group of individuals gathers on Saturday mornings (10 am until noon) at Faith Presbyterian Church on Stokes Road in Medford to turn piles of plastic grocery bags into sleep mats for the homeless. You are invited to join this mission project in two ways: 1) join the group any Saturday morning to construct mats, or 2) bring your plastic bags to MUMC to be collected and shared with the people at Faith Presbyterian. For additional information, please contact Karen Dvorschak.

Summer Youth Mission Trip: Our annual youth mission trip to REACH in Roanoke, VA is scheduled for July 4-10, 2020. To join the group, or just learn more about the trip, please contact Bethany Carl.

Soul Reset: Are you overcommitted? Overscheduled? Overwhelmed? You are not alone! As we usher in a New Year, join us in a six week small group study as we learn how to reorder our lives and have our souls stay connected to God, our source of Living Water. One group will be meeting on Tuesday evenings (beginning January 14) from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at the Estevez home. We are looking for additional facilitators so multiple small groups can be formed and different times/dates offered.
