Subject: This Week at Medford UMC -- November 8, 2019

This week at Medford UMC for {today}.

Tomorrow, Saturday, Nov 9 -- All Church Work Day! Come at 9:00 am and bring your rakes and leaf blowers.

A Word from the Pastor

Friends -

As you may have guessed from our daily devotions this week, Sunday we begin a new series on humility.

It's one of the most important characteristics of the Christian life, and one of the most easily overlooked. We need it in order to learn (you can't be teachable if you think you know everything), in order to take correction (you can't see what you're doing wrong if you always think you're right), and in order to practice faith (when we've got it all under control, we have no need for God).

I want to thank whoever it was that offered the suggestion for a series. A note showed up in my mailbox that said something like: "Why is it so easy to see other's faults but so difficult to look inside and recognize our own?" I thought it was a great question. So thank you - we'll look at this question Sunday!

Join us at 8:15, 9:30 or 11:00 - "The Perils of Pride" - see you then!

Peace, Joe

Let’s Give Thanks

Our ministry partner, the Neighborhood Center of Camden, is collecting food for local families. Click here for a printable list of items suggested for donation. Bring all donations to the church by Sun. Nov. 24. Please stay that Sunday and help with sorting (after the 9:30 service) and delivering to Camden (at 1:00 pm). For more info, please contact Karen Dvorschak.

Live Nativity at the Dickens Festival

Please join us on Sat. Dec. 7 in bringing the story of Christmas to the Medford community! We need people to be angels and shepherds (anyone in 4th grade or older), Wise People (adults or older/taller teens), Mary and Joseph. We need people to set up the lights and sound equipment and then more people to break it down at the end of the night. We need a hot chocolate/hot cider crew. We need people to bake cookies the week before the festival. We need singers, hospitality people, animal wranglers and costume crew that night. There is, without a doubt, a spot for you to volunteer!  Get details and sign up at medfordumc.org/nativitysignup. Contact Pastor Kathleen with questions.

Opportunities to Serve & Give

Youth Mission Trip Informational Meeting: Mon. Nov. 11 at 6:30 pm. Youth currently in 8th - 12th grade are eligible to attend the Youth Mission Trip from July 4 - July 10, 2020. If your teenageer is interested in joining us or just curious about what happens on the trip, please have him/her come out to the meeting to learn more about this trip and ask questions. Email Bethany Carl if your teen cannot attend the meeting but is interested in more information.

Prom Dress Recycling: Urban Promise is hosting its annual "More than a Beauty Pageant" event and invites you to donate gently used prom dresses (sizes 0-20), dress shoes (sizes 5-12), and costume jewelry. Every young woman deserves the chance to have a beautiful dress for that special, once-in-a-lifetime event. Donations may be left on the coat rack outside the sanctuary before November 17. For questions, please contact Linda Campbell.

Advent is Coming! The first Sunday of Advent is December 1 and we need your help to “Deck the Halls” of the Sanctuary. If you are available to help on either Sunday, November 24 or 30, please contact Karen Maese through the church office.

Seasonal Singers: If you are an adult who enjoys singing, you are invited to join the MUMC choirs as they prepare for the Christmas Choral Candlelight Service (Sunday, December 15 at 7:00 pm). There is no need to commit to singing year-round with the choir – just for this season. Join us once a week at rehearsals (either Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 8:30 until around 9:15 pm, starting this week). You’ll have plenty of time to learn the music and feel comfortable singing with the group. If you would like to investigate this idea further, please email Carol for more information or just come out to rehearsal, where you can be assured of a warm welcome.

Christmas Collection: The Florence C. Jones Needlework Guild would like your assistance in collecting children’s games, clothing, and diapers. These items will be shared with several organizations, including the Children’s Home of Mt. Holly. Leave your donations in the box next to the choir room door no later than Sun. Dec. 1. Gift cards are also accepted. Contact the church office with any questions.

Events & Small Groups

For more info about any program, or to register for events, email office@medfordumc.org

Please Note: Youth Fellowship groups are not meeting this Sunday evening (Nov. 10). The chimes choir will also not be rehearsing this Sunday.

Book Club News: This month's selection is As Bright as Heaven by Susan Meissner. We'll meet on November 13. Meanwhile, find our group on Facebook at Medford UMC Book Club.

Be Less Stressed and More Flexible: Come out on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 pm for a Yoga Class led by Joan McGovern, registered yoga teacher. Each class begins and ends in prayer and each practice contains breath work (pranayama), standing, seated and supine poses (asana), and balance work. No need to sign up for the class, just be there. A donation is collected each week (suggested amount is $1 per person) and then donated to charity. For more information, email Joan.
