A Word from the Pastor

Friends -

All Saints' Sunday is one of my favorite days of the year. I love the hymns, the liturgy, the candles and communion. Even more, I love the fact that we've set aside this day to think about the gift of eternal life and to celebrate our loved ones who have gone on to that reward.

Despite having gone to seminary and having spent close to 20 years as a pastor, I still have trouble defining exactly what we mean when in the creed we say, "I believe in the communion of saints." I mean, the technical definition is easy enough - that the Church is not just those here on earth, but also those in heaven. But why was that important enough to include in the creed?

I think it was important enough because on the days when our faith is failing, we need to be reminded that we're not alone in our belief. The Church asks us to put our faith in things that we can't see - in fact, things that our everyday experience seems to contradict. We're asked to believe in the power of forgiveness and hope and love to change the world. It's on days when we have a hard time believing these things that we need to be reminded that we are not alone, and that we're not crazy. We have 2000 years of lived experience in the lives of the saints that proves there is a better way.

In this sense, the saints are always with us, always connected to us. They are still present, reminding us that the way of Jesus is worth pursuing, even when the evidence of our eyes tells us something different. It's in these moments that they speak to our hearts and bring us back to faith.

Join us this Sunday as we celebrate and remember our saints - at 8:15, our 9:30 intergenerational worship experience (remember, no Sunday School), and 11:00.

Peace, Joe

Church Conference

Our annual Church Conference will take place on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at Calvary Korean United Methodist Church in East Brunswick beginning at 10:00 am. There will be a time of worship and plenary session with other churches on our district. All church members are welcome to attend.

Intergenerational Worship

Join us this Sunday at 9:30 am for an intergenerational worship experience in the FLC. Sunday School classes will not be meeting.

All Church Work Day

You are invited to gather with us on Saturday, November 8 at 9:00 am to do some outdoor and indoor maintenance and cleaning. Participants of all ages can participate. Please bring your rakes, leaf blowers (already fueled up) and tarps. Coffee and donuts will be provided. For more information, please contact Tom Bintliff.

Opportunities to Serve & Give

Support MUMC While You Shop: Purchase gift cards at face value from the Busy Bees between now and November 10. A small percentage of the sales comes back to the Busy Bees and will be used to help our church. You will receive the gift cards on November 17.

Prom Dress Recycling: Urban Promise is hosting its annual "More than a Beauty Pageant" event and invites you to donate gently used prom dresses (sizes 0-20), dress shoes (sizes 5-12), and costume jewelry. Every young woman deserves the chance to have a beautiful dress for that special, once-in-a-lifetime event. Donations may be left on the coat rack outside the sanctuary before November 17. For questions, please contact Linda Campbell.

Baked Goods Needed: Medford Pride on Main is holding a Craft Fair at Medford UMC on Saturday, November 9. Our Reconciling Ministry Team will host a table of home baked goods and we need your assistance. Donations of cookies, brownies, pies, cakes, quick breads and other items. Please note: we are looking for items that do not contain nuts. For cookies and brownies, it would be helpful to have three items (about 2-3” in diameter) placed in one clear, sealed baggie. If you can bake for us, please sign up outside the sanctuary or at the reception desk in the FLC. Baked goods should be dropped off in the Bowker kitchen by Friday, November 8 at 12 noon.

Advent is Coming! The first Sunday of Advent is December 1 and we need your help to “Deck the Halls” of the Sanctuary. If you are available to help on either Sunday, November 24 or 30, please contact Karen Maese through the church office.

Seasonal Singers: If you are an adult who enjoys singing, you are invited to join the MUMC choirs as they prepare for the Christmas Choral Candlelight Service (Sunday, December 15 at 7:00 pm). There is no need to commit to singing year-round with the choir – just for this season. Join us once a week at rehearsals (either Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 8:30 until around 9:15 pm, starting this week). You’ll have plenty of time to learn the music and feel comfortable singing with the group. If you would like to investigate this idea further, please email Carol for more information or just come out to rehearsal, where you can be assured of a warm welcome.

Events & Small Groups

For more info about any program, or to register for events, email office@medfordumc.org

Medford UMC Men’s Breakfast: Join us on Saturday, November 9 at 8:00 am in Bowker Hall. Not only will we be serving our 5-Star Breakfast Buffet, but you will also have the treat of spending time with our featured speaker, Anthony S. “Tony” Black -- a record-holding jockey renowned in North American Thoroughbred Horse Racing. At age 54 he became only the 21st jockey in North America to win 5,000 races. Tony has given back a significant part of his life to his local community and to jockeys in need of help covering medical expenses. Men of all ages are welcome to join us. Please contact Bruce Rosvold for additional information or to be included in the email notification list.

Book Club News: This month's selection is As Bright as Heaven by Susan Meissner. We'll meet on November 13. Meanwhile, find our group on Facebook at Medford UMC Book Club.

Be Less Stressed and More Flexible: Come out on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 pm for a Yoga Class led by Joan McGovern, registered yoga teacher. Each class begins and ends in prayer and each practice contains breath work (pranayama), standing, seated and supine poses (asana), and balance work. No need to sign up for the class, just be there. A donation is collected each week (suggested amount is $1 per person) and then donated to charity. For more information, email Joan.
