Subject: This Week at Medford UMC -- September 20, 2019

This week at Medford UMC for {today}.

UMW Flea Market Opens Tomorrow at 9:00 am!

A Word from the Pastor

One of the biggest challenges to motivation is the sense that what we can do is too small to make a difference.

So we don't bother with, for example, small steps that we know are good for the environment (using reusable water bottles, coffee cups & grocery bags, going paperless in banking and other transactions, carpooling, etc.) It just feels like the tiniest of drops in an enormously large bucket.

I get that feeling. Sometimes I don't bother to argue with the cashier who wants to give me a plastic bag for that one item I bought. But I also refuse to believe that nothing we do matters.

This weekend, we're going to talk about how the prophets - including Jesus - weren't afraid to take symbolic actions to make a point. People may have said, "what difference will that make?", walked by and laughed, or just plain ignored them. But we continue to tell these stories hundreds and thousands of years later. Obviously, they meant SOMETHING. They made impressions, started conversations, and launched movements. What can they teach us today about how to tackle big challenges?

Join us on Sunday at 8:15, 9:30 or 11 - and if you can't be here in person, don't forget to check out our livestream at 9:30 through our Facebook page.

Peace, Joe

Daily Devotionals in the App

Over the next few weeks, we are offering a new Daily Devotional (Monday-Friday). In our app, you will find a scripture passage from the prophets, a reflection, and some questions for you to ponder. Download the app (Medford UMC-NJ on Apple or Android) and get access to this new feature!

Opportunities to Serve & Give

Feed My Sheep Outreach Volunteer Opportunity: Five volunteers are needed on Sunday, September 29 (1:00 – 3:00 pm) to serve with our dedicated and enthusiastic outreach leaders. You’ll be transporting food to New Beginnings UMC in Camden and then staying to set up for lunch and serve guests. Please contact John Cornue to ask questions or to volunteer.

Busy Bees at Boscov's: Look for the Busy Bees before and after worship on Sunday -- they will be selling Friends and Family Passes for Boscov's. For just $5, you can purchase a pass that will get you 25% off everything at Boscov's for one whole day -- October 16. The proceeds help the Busy Bees help the church!

Do You Buy Food? If you ever eat out or shop in stores, you can help grow the church’s Scholarship Fund! “The Food Book of SJ” is being sold for $10 a copy (in the narthex, the FLC lobby and the church office). You will save far more than $10 using this coupon book – so maybe you should buy three! Questions? Contact Bethany Carl.

Glenna’s Gladiators: The MUMC Book Club is participating in the Greater Philadelphia Walk to Defeat ALS on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Citizens Bank Park to honor the memory of our friends Glenna Bishop and Diane O'Brien. You can help by walking with us, donating to us or praying for us! It’s easy to register or donate online -- simply click here! If you have any questions, please email Patty Rosvold.
