Subject: This Week at Medford UMC -- September 6, 2019

This week at Medford UMC for {today}.

United Methodist Men's Bible Study resumes tomorrow at 8:00 am and will meet on the first and third Saturdays of the month.

We return to our regular schedule this Sunday. Parents of children attending Sunday School are encouraged to attend a brief information session in Bowker Hall at 9:10 am.

A Word from the Pastor

Friends --

I am looking forward to getting back in the swing of our fall schedule. Though it means preaching an additional service every Sunday, I find that there are things I really appreciate about all of our worship experiences.

We are beginning a new series this Sunday, where we are trying to make connections between Jesus and the prophets of the Old Testament. Why is this important? Well, over the past few years, we've done several series where we've tried to get new perspectives on Jesus' teachings (Remember Happy, The Bad Habits of Jesus, and Stuff I Wish Jesus Hadn't Said?) I find it's very easy for us to get TOO familiar with Jesus and begin to assume we already know what he's about. Because very few of us (myself included) have an in-depth understanding of the prophets, I figure looking at Jesus as a prophet might reveal a totally different side of his life and teaching.

To help with this, we're also going to try something brand new - our own devotional. Beginning September 9, and through the 4 weeks of this series, we're going to publish a daily devotional in the app. This is a bit of an experiment - both in terms of encouraging people to embrace a new faith practice and helping people see the app as a faith-building tool. They'll be short enough to do with your morning coffee - a brief scripture passage from the prophetic books of the Bible, reflection, and then two questions to ponder (one oriented toward your relationship with God, one toward your relationship with others). I hope you'll give this a try and share your feedback with me so we can decide whether this is helpful. So, if you haven't already, start by downloading the app - search for "Medford UMC-NJ" in the Apple or Android app store. You'll find the daily devotional under "Media" (look in the bar at the bottom of the page). When you click there, "Daily Devotional" will be the first thing that pops up. I hope that over the next four weeks, you'll gain an appreciation for the message of the prophets by exploring some key passages I think every Christian needs to know.

Looking forward to seeing you back for worship and Sunday School this Sunday - at 8:15, 9:30 & 11:00!

Peace, Joe
